Watch the Throne: Kanye West and Jay-Z

I’ve listened to Watch the Throne from Kanye West and Jay-Z for a few days now and I’m not sure whether to like it or feel slightly disappointed it. I think both actually, I kind of expected more from these two greats.

I don’t even know which is supposed to be the hit on the album. With Kanye’s last one (Dark and Twisted Fantasy, yeah the theme is there) it was obvious that “Power” and “All the Lights” was going to strike gold, platinum, whatever.

But not with Watch the Throne. The first song No Church In the Wild has a great beat with a rumbling bass-line and the excellent chorus sung by Frank Ocean:

Human being to the mob
What’s a mob to a king?
What’s a king to a god?
What’s a god to a non-believer?
Who don’t believe in anything?

The theme to Watch the Throne feels a bit apocalyptic (DARK) in most of the songs, but it never takes the whole journey, it never blasts through and touches you on some deeper level. It’s good, competent, but not something special, not legendary (which I’m sure is where Jay-Z and Kanye planned it to go).

This is the opening (Jay-Z) from Watch the Throne which summarizes the feel of the album:

Tears on the mauseoleum floor
Blood stains the coliseum doors
Lies on the lips of a priest
Thanksgiving disguised as a feast
Rollin’ in the Rolls-Royce Corniche
Only the doctors got this, I’m hidin’ from police
Cocaine seats
All white like I got the whole thing bleached
Drug dealer chic
I’m wonderin’ if a thug’s prayers reach
Is Pious pious cause God loves pious?
Socrates asks, “Whose bias do y’all seek?”
All for Plato, screech
I’m out here ballin’, I know ya’ll hear my sneaks
Jesus was a carpenter, Yeezy, laid beats
Hova flow the Holy Ghost, get the hell up out your seats
Preach

Other good tracks are: Niggas in Paris, Otis, Gotta have it, Murder To Excellence. Pick it up, it’s good, it’s just not glorious. Buy Watch the Throne

Kanye West and Jay-Z: Watch The Throne

Yep, the long awaited album Watch The Throne between hip-hop’s two biggest names, Kanye West and Jay-Z will soon be released. You can pre-order it here. I should warn you not to buy Kenya Wrist’s Watch The Throne though! :)

What do you think of the cover? Louis Vuitton-inspired? Everybody knows Kanye is obsessed with gold so it’s not really a surprising theme. Givenchy Creative DirectorRiccardo Tisci designed it.

Please comment on what you think about it below.

Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Twitter

kanye11

Today Kanye West and Justin Bieber are “conversing” on Twitter. Kanye, who is a very talented songwriter and created the masterpiece College Dropout, tweeted that he can’t stop listening to Biebers song “Runaway Love” and that they should work together. Pretty amazing to see world famous artists do some social “tweetworking”. Twitter is a strange phenomenon.

Kanye’s tweets are pretty funny so I would recommend following them. Otherwise you must check out his new single “Power” that has been out for a while – it kicks some serious ass. He also did a song called “See Me Now” with Beyonce that you can download for free (free is good, right?). Kanye is always original, always controversial and always interesting.

When you check out different music clips online you often find nasty comments about Justin Bieber. People seem to really dislike him for being successful and harass him for not making “real” music. I don’t really like his music a whole lot (although “Baby” with Ludacris can be pretty addictive) but I think it is kind of unfair to take a talented 16-year old and crucify him as a symbol for the music industry today. Leave the guy alone and let him get all the success he can.

Don’t be hatin’
That’s just wastin’
Your energy, your time
Success is no crime
Be inspired not frustrated
Find your own way, not your hatred
That’s just lame jealousy
Don’t make fame an enemy
So don’t be hatin’
If you know what I’m sayin’
