I read loads and loads of King books when I was a young kid and I can actually credit him for helping me develop my interest in writing (how I ended up writing about human relationships and not thrillers/horror/paranormal is another story), so it was nice to reconnect with him for his latest work (since he’s so prolific, by the time you read this, it might not be his latest work).

The novel with the cryptic title 11/22/63 is about a man that gets the possibility to travel back in time and stop the assassination of JFK. I’m not going to say more than that, because I’m only 30% into the book at the moment, but so far it’s been a thrilling ride. King really has a masterful storyteller’s voice and really makes you want to dip back into his world, again and again and again.

Recommended!

Buy it on Amazon

I don’t like the phrase “writer’s block”, maybe because I rarely suffer from it. What I do suffer from more often is writer’s doubt, a feeling that comes over you when you write and makes you feel like you stink or as in my case (I use deodorant), that what I write is not interesting enough or that I’m in the wrong niche somehow. Maybe people don’t want to read about relationships, feelings and what’s going on inside of people (what I tend to write about) instead the interest seems to be more geared towards vampires, spaceships and murders, murders, murders.

I started my reading career reading everything Stephen King (and he sure is a fantastic writer, across genres) so I can understand the human interest in dark, paranormal thrillers, but I really love reading about people, how they interact, think, love and hurt, without any vampire aliens running around killing everybody. And if the writer makes me laugh as well – then I’m all for it. This is kind of what I’m aiming for, comedy with serious undertones or literary fiction with a good dose of humor in it.

But I’ve been battling this writer’s doubt lately that either my work isn’t good enough or people are just not interested in reading about the same stuff that I like to read about. Part of me (the commercial, sell-out, I want SUCCESS part) wants to chuck all the work I’ve been doing and start writing mystery books or thrillers with a vampire twist and the other part of me wants to say “I write what I like! And if you don’t like it - well go F#€ yourself!” In the end neither part seems to win, because after a day or three I have a good writing day where I feel like the story I’m writing is great and are destined for wonderful things (well at least I like it!). I would call this feeling the writer’s thrill.

The writer’s thrill is what I think all writers live for – that feeling when nothing on the page can stop you, no obstacle in the story is unsurmountable and you’re riding the divine wings of inspiration. That feeling is just the best (well, at least top 2) feeling in the world and I wish I could bottle it up and consume it at will. Sadly, or maybe justly, writing isn’t that easy. You need to stick with it through the rough days, when every word is like squeezing a drop of blood out of your temples and when almost every paragraph you write ends with you feeling “well, that’s probably shit” and you seem to be hitting the delete button more than any other key, because on the other side of the coin you get the glorious waves of the great days, when your subconscious is on tap and you only need to direct it towards the page.

When I started writing this post I was, as you can understand, in the gloomiest of writer moods. I had the writer’s doubt big time! I just couldn’t feel connected enough to the story I’m writing and if I wasn’t such a compulsive finish-what-I-started person, I could’ve possibly given it up by now. But a few days later the mood around the story shifted and I felt great again. I didn’t do anything differently I just went to work on the story every day, no matter how discouraging it could be. That’s the secret to being a writer I’ve realized (at least a half-competent one) – consistency.

So to summarize this little post about writer’s block, writer’s thrill and writer’s doubt, I just want to say that writing is damn difficult sometimes and pretty easy other times and just work in between. But it’s work we enjoy, right?
